Cognitive Assessment

Each person is unique in his or her set of cognitive abilities, whether verbal, musical, mathematical or visual. Analysing the interdependencies between these abilities has enabled us to develop a method for the global assessment of intelligence: the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) test. These IQ tests are based on a wide range of psychometric and psychotechnical methods for assessing intelligence.

Considered to be among the most reliable, consistent and validated tools available to psychologists, IQ tests are widely recognised as a relevant measure of general intelligence. They are frequently used in a variety of contexts, from education to work and leisure.

Higher education establishments use these assessments to select candidates, while companies include them in their recruitment processes. It is important to note that many IQ tests available online lack standardisation and validation, providing neither reliable results nor an accurate measure of intelligence. Creating a standardised and scientifically valid IQ test requires considerable work and methodological rigour.

Understanding IQ

Standardised IQ tests are designed so that scores are distributed according to a Gaussian curve or 'bell curve' within the population, with a mean set at 100. This curve shows a central peak, representing the majority of the population, and tapers towards the extremities, where there are fewer individuals. In statistics, this distribution is called normal.

The area under the curve between two specific values indicates the percentage of the population with an IQ in that range. The different score ranges on the curve are distinguished by colours, representing units of standard deviation.

The standard deviation, which measures the dispersion of scores within the population, is generally 15 for IQ tests. Around 70% of people fall between scores of 85 and 115. Only a tiny proportion of the population (around 0.1 % or one person in a thousand) score below 55 or above 145.

Recent research shows that IQ is not an invariable, genetically predetermined number. A person's IQ score can change significantly over time, positively or negatively, depending on how their brain is used and trained.

Interpretation of results

Less than 70

Increased need for support

IQ tests can reveal results that are considerably below average, indicating significant difficulties. People with these results may face significant challenges in their daily lives and may need additional support to adapt to their environment.

Between 70 and 85

Moderate Skills

People who score in this category generally have a below-average IQ. Their cognitive skills may be slightly limited compared with the norm, which may influence their ability to understand and solve complex problems.

Between 85 and 130

Normal capacity

People in this category have an average IQ, corresponding to the majority of the population. Their cognitive skills are considered normal and they are generally capable of adapting to the demands of everyday life and solving common problems.

More than 130

Exceptional skills

People who score in this category generally have above-average IQs. Their intellectual performance is exceptional and they can demonstrate advanced skills in many areas. This group represents the highest 2 % in the population.
